Middle East and North Africa Concentrating Solar Power
Knowledge and Innovation Program

How large is the demand for heat in industrial processes?

Global heat demand amounts to 44 Exajoules (EJ), or 12200 Terawatt hours (TWh), according to this report published by the Solar Payback Program.

To put this into context, bringing one liter of water to 100 ºC requires 4180 Joules. This means that the global heat demand for low and medium temperature applications is enough to heat up 10526 km3 of water to 100 ºC, the same volume of water contained in more than 4200 Olympic-size swimming pools.
