[Workshop] CMI Launches Network for Municipalities Hosting Refugees

  • Starts: Sep 05, 2016
  • Ends: Sep 05, 2016
  • By: CMI
  • Context/ Rationale

In light of the high influx of refugees in the Middle East, North Africa (MENA) and Turkey, a growing number of municipalities is facing significant challenges in responding to this unprecedented crisis, which often extends beyond local governments’ traditional responsibilities (education, employment, aid relief and emergency shelter, health, etc.). The challenges municipalities face (in service delivery, social cohesion, local economy, etc.) require not only significant additional resources, but also innovative solutions and thinking.

Following the exchanges from the Peer to Peer learning workshop “Mediterranean Municipalities at the Forefront of the Refugee Crisis” which took place in Amman May 30-June 1st 2016, and based on municipalities’ expression of interest, CMI set up a Host Municipalities Learning Network on September 5, 2016. The network based on an online platform is designed to offer a privileged space for municipalities hosting refugees to exchange and learn from each other’s experiences and best practices to ensure the common welfare of host communities and refugees. It is moderated by the Center for Mediterranean Integration, as part of the Mediterranean Refugees and Host Communities Program and will create a dedicated space for regional exchange and dialogue.

    Objective

To support MENA host communities with evidence-based knowledge and to share innovative solutions to improve their response capacity in public service delivery for refugees and the most vulnerable

    Activities

Creation and maintenance of the “Host municipalities network” –online platform (private Facebook group). Launched with the core group of participants to the Amman workshop in May 2016, this platform will be progressively opened to other host communities and relevant partners, upon demand. If you are interested to join, please contact us (refugees@cmimarseille.org).

The implementation of a series of face-to-face technical workshops for municipal practitioners on priority sectors: solid waste management, social cohesion, health & psychosocial support, and housing. Opportunities for field visits to share best practices will be explored with partners, and the main outcomes of each workshop will be circulated through the online platform.

The creation and publication of a compendium of best practices collected through the Amman workshop, the online platform, and upcoming discussions and technical workshops.
Organization of an annual peer-to-peer workshop for communities hosting refugees, bringing the different technical working groups together planned for May/June 2017.
