  • On the southern shore of the Mediterranean, cities grow fast and create high expectations amongst the population, in particular with regards to public services’ provision and social infrastructures. Faced with the need to master increasingly complex tasks in a short period of time, cities can benefit from peer-to-peer exchange of experiences to improve their urban management planning.

In this context, the MedCities network and the Knowledge Transfer Center (KTC) of Sfax, in partnership with the Urban Community of Tetouan, CoMun-GIZ program, the Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) and the World Bank, are organizing the Regional Seminar on "Implementation of Urban Development Strategies and Participatory Approach", on April 21-22, 2015, in Tetouan, Morocco. This seminar reflects the objectives of CoMun-GIZ program that aims to strengthen the capacity of cities in terms of local urban governance and participatory democracy; as well as the objectives of the CMI which supports cooperation and knowledge exchange across the Mediterranean region. Furthermore, the seminar falls within the consolidation project of the KTC of Sfax which aims to become an urban strategic planning hub in the Maghreb.

The conference is designed to provide an opportunity for municipalities and other national institutions to learn from each other’s experiences on urban planning initiatives and citizen participation in the field of cities development strategies. This regional dialogue encourages exchange of good practices on urban strategic projects and aims to support municipalities as key players in shaping the future of their cities. The participants will consist of mayors and representatives from municipalities in the Maghreb, representatives of governments, municipal associations, and institutions dedicated to the promotion of urban communities. Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Spain will be represented. A total of 60 participants are expected to contribute to and benefit from this seminar. A second conference on the same theme, will be organized by the Medcities network on May 26-27, 2015 at the KTC of Al Faayah, Lebanon.

The first day of the seminar will consist of roundtable discussions on several themes on urban strategy and participation including: "The participation of local stakeholders in defining urban policies" and "The structures of local and participatory governance to revitalize strategic sectors". The various interventions will feature cases from the MENA region. The second day will focus on exchanging practical experiences related to the implementation of urban strategies. The program “Cities for a New Generation” will be invited to present the diagnosis about social accountability within the cities development strategies.

This seminar is financially supported by the CMI, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and the Barcelona City Council.
